Potty Training

Well I am not an expert.  I am a mom!  I struggle every day with making the right decisions about parenting.  I do my best.  Sometimes I loose my cool but I always love.

My little boy, nearing 3 years old, exhibits signs of being potty trained.  He poops now in the toliet.  And will pee in the toliet if he is coaxed to sit still!  All the parenting experts suggest that little boys pee first & hold pooping habits for some time.  If you have ever read my blog you will remember that we have had LOTS of issues with pooping in the bedroom, the lawn and playing in it.  I washed more poop than anyone I have ever heard about.  So the fact that I can write that he poops in the toliet is a great success!!  And he tells us when he needs to go!  So he has mastered that!

I decided on January 1st that we would give up diapers & pullups and I bought some fancy trainer pants.  I bought Mickey Mouse underpants.  I got rewards ready.  And we started.  I was patient.  I tried. I yelled.  I cried. I cleaned pee off my couches & floors.  I kept trying.  I let him go naked both inside & out.  He poops with no problems and some days he does great and pees in the toliet every time and is dry all day.  Other days he refuses... I mean ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to even sit on the toliet.....

So it is February 8th and every day I give him the option to wear big boy unders or pullups.  And whatever his choice I go with it.  I encourage & take him to the bathroom.  I try to make it fun.  I never lay him down to change him.  I encourage him to change himself.  Sometimes, like today, he surprises me & runs in to the toliet and undresses & goes pee.  Sometimes he makes me so mad because he won't try at all!

The parenting experts have it all figured out.  I will guess that they never had a 2 year old!  So tomorrow I will wake up and start over again.  I guess he will be potty trained when he is ready!  Which leads me to what I must remember every single day.....

I am a stay at home mom.  From day ONE with Espen we didn't rush him.  He has had the ability to move through his life at his pace.  We allowed him to just grow slowly and experience things at his level.  It is the reason I stay home!  I must remind myself every day lately that he is just 2 and that his world is not the same as mine. There is no rush.  We are not in a hurry.  We can take it one day at a time and see what happens.  I am the one who must have patience and be kind & gentle so that he can just have the time he needs to grow and develop.  His world is all new and fresh and exciting.... mine is exhausting! So I will lovingly give him space to make the potty mistakes.... and I will do my best to keep my couch clean!

  1. Believe me, potty training can be a long process. I always heard about those people who did it in a day. My children are not that way. It took Grace 14 months and she was finally trained When she was 3 years and about 3 months. With Martin, it took a little less time but just as much anguish. He was 3 years and about 8 months. They say boys take longer. We didn't even really start to try with him until after he turned 3. He just didn't show any signs of readiness or interest before that point. Hang in there! Courtney
