and then???
I suppose you'd want to know what I did then? Well I waited & did some research for a few days (until I broke the computer - but that is another days story!). I was lonely without my camera and was missing vital moments in the growth of a 9 month old! So with some of my hard earned cash from the music store, I went to my favorite location (Target) and without hesitation I purchased the new CANON. I felt sure of my decision and tossed the bag, the box & the reciept it seems.
Sleeker, smaller, black it is supposed to be an upgrade... the Powershop SD780 IS is not an upgrade. I haven't decided if it is my friend yet. WHY?? you may be asking...
10 days.. yep 10, ONE drop happened and the camera went into a few pieces and BROKE. Yes you heard me... I dropped it innocently and accidentally onto a floor & it was finished. KaPUT. NOTHING. I broke down in sobs. I BROKE IT.... my new camera. I didn't have anymore money. I'm broke. I would never be able to take a picture of my son. I sobbed.... and sobbed... and hated this CANON.
I was encouraged to return it to Target and see if they would help me... I thought my chances slim... but I told the truth to a nice young woman and she replaced the camera (and gave me a reciept!!) ... and I gave her oddly some coin from Norway.... it seems my tears & the most beautiful baby in the world allowed her to feel some compassion for us. She looked up my reciept and was able to issue me an exchange. I was relieved and nervous to have the same one again. I will be careful I told myself & her!
So I came home with a new CANON (again). I've been careful. I wear the wrist strap. I am mindful about where I leave it. I put it in a case. It is all a pain. I want it to just LIVE with me and not need special care. I don't want to worry about it... for now though it is making me happy. It works... until I break it!
The coins... I didn't forget... I paid for a book at the same time as the exchange & was digging in my wallet for some change when I pulled out some Norwegian money that I just carry in case I find myself on the next plane to somewhere. And I said "this Norwegian money is not going to help me right now pay for the book" and the kind young woman said "OOOHH you have Norwegian money? My family is from there & it is my dad's dream to go there but we will never afford it". So I GAVE HER THE MONEY... It was not much... maybe 50NOR... but it made her day and she excitedly told me how it make her dad happy. My wallet needs some more change because I just never know....
And today, my camera is working...

You gotta love the Canons! Yes, some of the newer, less expensive styles can break easily, but I still love them. Both of my bigger pro-style video cameras are Canons and my Digital SLR camera is a Canon. They are just beasts!
ReplyDeleteLast year, I was out filming some sporting event for a client and I had my newest, latest and greatest (expensive) Canon HD camera with me on a tripod. The camera was about 7 feet off the gound as it was filming. Suddenly the Tripod head slipped, fell backwards, and I watched in all my horror (now in mental slow motion) my camera fall 7 feet off that tripod and bounce, yes bounce and flip off the concrete ground below. My whole business flashed in front of my eyes as I realized my precious Canon that it took so long to finally be able to afford, had just fallen to its doom, and there was no way I'd be able to afford to fix it and several projects half done with waiting clients.
But, I picked it up, dusted it off, and kept going. There was no scratch, no dent, no ill affects whatsoever (not even a smoking flash!). The tank had taken a hit and didn't even flinch. I was shocked.. and relieved, and now much wiser when I have it doing high shoots on a tripod....
So keep at the Canon's! I now wouldn't buy any other brand!
I can see the horror you must have felt... geez. And the shock & relief that must have spread through you when it worked!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the new one i have but i'm a sure fan & will base my experiences on the great success I had with the last one!! it sits here on my desk pleading with me to take it out on grand adventures. I think I should recycle it but just can't bring myself to part with it. Canon has an area on their web to get a camera fixed but the serial number is gone from my camera... oh the drama! So I go on with the new one.... tring to love it!
