September 27 ~ 2011 Historic Sites
laptop still is broken...
any of us who have traveled down an american highway have seen the little signs we fly past that tell you an historic site is approaching. then you pass by a spot in the road and wonder to yourself if anyone ever stops at those sites... and if you are like me you wonder about those people, about who does maintenance, who cares??
well i freaking PLANNED on stopping at one! seems outside of dodge city there is one that is along the santa fe trail. is supposed to have the ridges left by wagons or rains or trains (i don't know what).... this site has a full color brochure. i couldn't believe it either! it is why we went! and it was pretty... it was a spot in the road with a sign, a trail, a few more really well done signs, more trail and a rock monument telling us it was an historic site. it was well maintained.
we were not the only folks there. oddly we got in conversation with a gentleman passing through who was interested in history and in a buffalo herd in the next town. nice guy.

the funniest thing though is that we didn't know what or were to look when we got to the end of the trail. sure there were some ridges but looked like the wash out from a rain storm. looked same to me as the washout at my parents ranch. there were some ridges from some trucks but that is much more modern than a wagon... so we walked and looked and enjoyed the view.
espen was most fascinated with the cactus growing along the trail... and i was just curious about the whole deal...
