Determination
This morning for unknown reasons, Espen woke up thinking today was the day we would skate! He talked about it all morning. His notion was confirmed when he caught the segment on the TODAY show about skating and safety... MAN he was so determined to get us to the rink.
Somehow I managed to get us into the truck to go to Gymboree. He discussed with me why he did not want to go to Gymboree but wanted to skate instead. He pleaded. He cried. He called Anders & Daddy asking them both to take him RIGHT NOW. At Gymboree he was unhappy because we weren't skating. He was still HOURS later sure we would get to the ice.
We cancelled our membership to Gymboree today. Not because of the ice but because he doesn't seem interested in going and I am tired of the drama every week. It is to much of an investment financially and time wise for me to deal with the drama! He never pulls this drama when it is swim time so I pulled us. I was sad. I think it is good for him to go interact with little people. It is so freaking cute when he sings & claps & participates with the kids! But as the winter approaches the notion of the drive with a disinterested child is daunting. So we are out.
After Gymboree today we had lunch with Doug and Espen was still determined we would skate. I told him we would go get a helmet from the hockey store. And for sure he was even more sure of our time to go skate! Well the hockey store didn't have anything for such a small head. But recommended I get a bike helmet for him and told me where the nearest ice rink was.... not far from us.. about 10 minutes if I get the lights right!! So I'll check it out.. got to get the kid on the ice... But I am darn sure going to get a helmet first because this little boy doesn't want mommy to help him (I'm not cool!)... he will do it by himself & figure it out.. but I'll protect his brains!!
What surprises me the most is that he is so determined. He is 2 (and 5 months)... and no amount of changing subject, offering to play, treat offers, etc persuaded him away from his agenda. He is 2 and he absolutely has a notion of what he wants to do and he can verbalize that notion and keep on until some action happens. I have ignored and bribed today and he is still on his fast track to the rink.... He fell asleep in the car on the way home & when I was carrying him to his bed for a little nap, he woke enough to ask me if we were at the rink... nearly broke my heart to tell him no... So I suspect when he wakes up he will continue on his quest to get me to take him skating RIGHT NOW... I dread and am excited about his determined mind and wonder where we will go in the future...
