Shoes

The most comforting thing in our house right now is shoes... strange statement... let me explain.  Somehow about 8 years ago we started leaving shoes at the door when we came in.  For me, it is a blessing in cleaning.  Less crap gets tracked all over the place.  It is also a blessing when we are searching for a pair... they are typically by a door!  So at any given moment there are shoes by doors at our house.  We walk over and around them all the time.

Shoes are not just practical but also a personal statement and a definition of self and a reminder of times and places.  They are given as gifts and bought when we need them for special occassions.

A week ago, Anders went back to Norway.  He loves his shoes.  And I have been tripping over his shoes for a week.  There are some by front door and back door.  Strangely there was a pair in the living room that Espen was playing with.  It was a comfort to see those shoes left stranded everywhere.  I think the owner will be back for them soon!

This week for some reason, the old shoes that no longer fit Espen were left in the foyer.  One pair was his cowboy boots.  Anders got those boots for him in Dodge City before we went to the RODEO.  It was hot the day of the rodeo & my cute little boy wore his boots, a cowboy hat & shorts!  We had a great time!!  Seeing those little boots that he has outgrown was a comfort to me... brought back some happy memory & some little bit of sadness that my son is growing up and no longer fits in his little boots.

I own several great pair of running shoes that have been given to me.  They make me smile each time I wear them, I am happy to feel like the person who gave them to me is able to be part of my memory.... I am happy that someone cared enough about me to take care of my feet... it is a great comfort to me...

Today I put all of the shoes away.... and when I walked in after work, it was sad.  There was no comfort there.  I was upset.  My comfort pieces were all put away...
