Geocaching

I came across this catalog that sold geocaching supplies.  The supplies were super cute but I was not very familiar with the term.  My sisters family have searched and found some caches.   I googled it (of course).  It is a fascinating 'family' activity that I felt I could do with my little guy while at parks. I won't bore you with the details of what it is... that can be found at the geochaching website.  The quick overview is that geocaching is a treasure hunt utilizing GPS coordinates.  Who doesn't like to find treasure! It intrigues me to locate something and sign my name to the history of the find.

I downloaded the app onto my smart phone and we were on our way.  The first cache was just down the street and we just walked down there.  And we searched and searched.  We looked high.  We looked low.  We looked and looked.  All I saw was a bird house in a strange spot.  My mind did not register any thing weird about that.  But when we found was an abandoned ball, Espen thought that was the treasure we were searching for and we were finished!

Then my mom came into town and we searched for 3 more sites!  And we were NOT SUCCESSFUL.  Not even ONE time.  We searched hard.  We moved weeds, trasped through the mud and muck.  We walked and searched.  When we found an old fishing pole (we brought it home!) Espen again thought we were finished!  So we are feeling like perhaps this geocaching thing is not our thing!

Then for fun I decided to look for one near the park while Espen was playing.  He was doing well entertaining himself with rock piles so I walked a few yards and searched.  And I FOUND IT.  It was very exciting to locate it!  And there were little treasures inside.  I signed my scribble mark to the log & replaced it!  It was an exciting moment for me in my quest to be a geocacher!

And now I am eager to see if I can locate another.  It is entertainment that gets us off the couch, is free and is engrossing and engaging.  For me it incorporates the use of my handy smart device and my son can participate!  It is not exercise for us in the extreme sense but it gives me something to do when we are already outside!  And who knows... maybe I will get a few caches under my belt & hide one of my own...
